It has been reported that over 40,000 British women have had PIP Breast implants which may have an increased risk of rupture or silicone leak.
MRI is the preferred imaging method for potential leaks in silicone breast implants, with high sensitivity and specificity for detection and classification of rupture.

MRI in the upright position, with the breasts under the influence of gravity is the best method for assessing pain and discomfort following breast implant surgery rather than imaging supine when the weight of the breast is redistributed.

A solution for claustrophobic patients
Upright weight-bearing MRI enables claustrophobic patients, who cannot tolerate conventional “tunnel” scanners, to be examined without stress as it is completely open at the front.
Other abnormalities involving breast implants
Not only will Upright MRI show if an implant has been ruptured and is leaking, but the examination can also assess the degree of abnormality in the following situations:
- Breast sagging (ptosis).
- Distortion and hardening of the breast, caused by tightening of the tissue over the implant (capsular contracture).
- Implant slippage, movement or rupture.
- Problems with implant placement or the creation of the ‘pockets’ for the implants, causing one or both implants to sit too high, too low or to the side (lateral displacement).
- Lop-sided or different sized breasts (asymmetry).
- Implants crossing over in the centre of the chest (symmastia).
- “Double-bubble” effect, where the breast has a double instead of single mound appearance.
- “Bottoming out” – this is a problem which occurs when the implant falls to the bottom of the breast.
