Updated MRI of the Prostate

Improved MRI imaging of the prostate gland is now available  at  the Medserena Upright MRI Centre. MRI is currently the most sensitive technique to diagnose prostate cancer (Ahmed HU. Nature reviews Clinical oncology 2009; 6(4):197–206) 

Who would benefit from Upright Open MRI?

If you need a prostate MRI, a specialised 3.0T MRI scan would most likely be your Doctor’s choice. However, what to do if you are one of the many people that cannot tolerate a conventional prostate MRI either due to claustrophobia, or lack of tolerance for insertion of the internal coil that is required?

Why choose Upright Open MRI?

Our scanner is completely open-you sit during the exam and nothing is in front of you- so is well tolerated by claustrophobic people. We dispense with the use of an endo-rectal coil, using a specialist Quad coil that you would sit on during the examination to give an excellent demonstration of the prostate gland and urinary bladder. This has the additional benefit of reducing the chance of motion artefact.

How good is the quality?

“Conventional open” MRI has often had a poor reputation, with its very low field strengths. Not all open MRI scanners are the same. The quality of the examination performed on this Fonar scanner, one of only two in the UK, exceeds that of any “conventional open” MRI. The unique horizontal magnetic field and modern quadrature coils used by the fonar scanner enables the production of high resolution MRI scans, often indistinguishable from those made using higher field strength magnets.

We have also just updated our prostate exam capabilities with DWI, and ADC scoring. These techniques, which are gaining in popularity, are not available with any other low magnetic field strength scanner.
