Brain: Chiari 1 Malformation

Most of the brain scans performed at Medserena Upright MRI Centre are for patients with claustrophobia who are unable to complete an examination in a conventional tunnel or bore scanner. Fortunately, because of the unique transverse magnetic field employed by the Upright scanner high quality images of the brain, similar to those made at 1.5T,  are possible.

This midline sagittal section demonstrates normal  brain anatomy as well as the small pituitary gland. In addition the low lying cerebellar tonsils of a Chiari 1 malformation are beautifully demonstrated. Scanning in the upright position under the influence of gravity can be helpful in assessing such malformations.
