We are the only Upright MRI facility in Europe to offer this important imaging technique which is useful in the evaluation of CSF flow in patients with abnormal CSF flow dynamics. It is of use in the management of patients with Chiari malformation, syringomyelia, hydrocephalus, aquaduct stenosis and following whiplash injury.
The advantage of the Upright MRI scanner in this technique is that the patient may be examined in a weight-bearing position that can be useful in certain clinical conditions(eg Chiari), as well as in flexion or extension positions. As the scanner is truly open, it allows claustrophobic patients access to this examination where that was previously not available to those who could not tolerate a conventional closed tunnel or bore scanner.
Below are two images from a dynamic series in a patient who required evaluation of CSF flow. The upper image illustrates CSF flow in systole and the lower in diastole, showing normal CSF flow dynamics.
